If you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy and considering abortion, it’s critical to learn how the process works. Each abortion method comes with side effects and risks, so it’s important to be fully informed.
At 1st Way, we provide education on all pregnancy options in a non-judgmental environment. You’ll have the details needed to make a confident decision.
Abortion Methods
The type of abortion depends on how far along the pregnancy is, along with other factors. There are two primary abortion methods: medical abortion and surgical abortion.
Medical Abortion
Also called the abortion pill, medical abortion involves taking two different drugs. The first drug, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, a hormone that helps the pregnancy grow and develop. Without progesterone, the pregnancy can no longer continue.
The second drug, misoprostol, causes uterine contractions that expel the pregnancy from the body. This method is FDA-approved through 10 weeks gestation. After that point, it can be less effective and lead to health risks.
Abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding will occur when the drugs are taken. Additional side effects may include:
- Upset stomach
- Vomiting
- Fever
- Chills
- Diarrhea
- Headache
Additionally, taking abortion drugs is associated with certain risks, including:
- Digestive symptoms (i.e., upset stomach)
- Fever
- Infection
- Heavy, prolonged bleeding
- An incomplete abortion, potentially requiring surgical treatment
Surgical Abortion
Surgical abortion is performed in a clinic or hospital and uses instruments, suction, and drugs to end the pregnancy. The later in pregnancy, the more involved the procedure will be.
Side effects include mild cramping and light spotting or bleeding. What’s more, though less common, certain risks are associated with surgical abortion. These risks include:
- Perforation of the uterus (when a surgical tool pokes a hole in the uterus)
- Damage to the cervix
- Scar tissue on the uterine wall
- Infection
